「ものともせず」を"in spite of"としても良い場合も多いと思いますが、文脈によっては齟齬が生じると思います。

「寒さをものともせず、彼は薄着で出かけていった。彼はその服を着ざるを得なかった。」は拍子抜けした日本語だと思います。
問題文の場合は、多少冗長でも、
In spite of the cold, he made nothing of it and went out in thin clothes.
とすれば日本語に忠実かもしれません。
