【解答】be on the point of -ing（＝be about to -）まさに―しようとしている。

point は「点」なので、at は使えないものかと調べ直したら、次のような記述があった。

at the point of A = on the point of A 

on the point of A　まさにAするところで（Aは（名）（動名）） Kelly was on the point of bursting into tears. ケリーはまさにわっと泣き出さんばかりであった.

この熟語表現は『Next Stage』（桐原書店）や『Vintage』（いいずな書店）などの英文法問題集には掲載されていないし、『英熟語ターゲット1000』（旺文社）や『システム英熟語』（駿台文庫）にもない。したがって、出題頻度はそれほど高いとは思われないが、掲載されているものもいくつか見受けられる。

が、いずれも前置詞 at への言及はみられない。

　最後に専門書の記述を見ておこう。

Suzi was at the pointo of crying when the teacher stopped the other children from teasing her.（ほかの子供たちがスージーをいじめるのを先生がとがめたときには、彼女はいまにも泣き出しそうだった） 

アメリカ語法では　at が好まれる．上例を次のように表現してもよい．Suzi was just about to cry ....
