「的外れ」の英訳について

「的外れ」を besides the point とした誤りがネットに散見されるが、あくまでも s のない beside が正解である。 


『ジーニアス和英辞典』（大修館）第２版 の「的外れ」を見ると

その質問は的はずれだThe question is beside [ off,  away from ] the point.

となっている。Google で検索をかけると次のような頻度であった。

away from the point  275,000,000 件 

off the point　　　　　　261,000,000 件 

beside the point            29,800,000 件

また、point の代わりに mark が用いられることもある。検索結果は次の通りである。

off the mark　　　　　　 43,100,000 件 

wide of the mark            1,130,000 件 

beside the mark　　　　　　315,000 件

beside the point, wide of the mark は『Next Stage』にも出てくるので覚えておきたい。また、

to the point （要領を得た）　⇔ beside the point （要領を得ない）

にも注意。
